#13 Robert MATHAMS – 52 Ancestor Challenge

No Story Too Small – Amy Johnson Crow’s challenge of 52 Ancestors this year, has been the inspiration to writing up my family history stories.

Robert MATHAMS who was baptized 22 July 1786 at Margaretting, Essex, is my 3rd great grandfather – with my cousin Jan we visited the church several years ago. Together we are doing a One Name Study of the name which shows up in many different forms – MATHAMS, MATTHAMS, MATHEMS, and of course is often confused in records with MATTHEWS.

His parents are Gregory MATHAMS and Betsy CARTER – although the baptism record shows him as son of Gregory MARTHAMS and Betsy of Butsbury.

A marriage licence was taken out on 13 October 1809 by Robert MATHAMS of Purleigh, baker and Nathaniel MIDDLEDITCH of the same place, farmer, – £100 bond in respect of the intended marriage between Robert MATHAMS, bachelor and Susanna MIDDLEDITCH, spinster.

The actual marriage took place at Purleigh on 17 October 1809. Robert MATHAMS of this parish, batchelor and Susannah MIDDLEDITCH of this parish spinster, married in this Church by licence; he signed & she made her mark ITPO Edward MIDDLEDITCH, Mary Ann MATHAMS, Elizabeth CROOKS.

The first child was baptized 1 September 1810 at Purleigh, Essex; as Nathaniel Robert son of Robert & Susanna MATTHAM; admitted to church 1 Jan 1812.

On January 16, 1812 the Will of father in law Nathaniel MIDDLEDITCH said “to sell the bakery in Purleigh occupied by Robert MATHAMS.”

On May 10, 1812, the couple baptized their daughter Ann

Obviously, the family had to leave Purleigh once the bakery was sold and we next find them baptizing a son at St Dionis Backchurch, London as George s/o Robert & Susannah MATTHAMS, abode Pauls Head Court, father a baker; bapt 17 Oct 1813

June 15, 1817 finds them in Purleigh baptizing William s/o Robt and Susan MATHAMS abode London, father a Baker.

They make a permanent move to Ipswich, Suffolk.

Here on August 23 1818 at St Helens, there is a baptism for Gregory son of Robert and Susanna MATHUMS, abode Rope Lane, occupation baker.

On the 14th of January 1821 at St Helens, Ipswich, Suffolk, we find the baptism of Susanna daughter of Robert and Susanna MATHAMS, abode Rope Lane, occupation baker.

Marthannah MATHAMS is baptised 12 April 1829, as d/o Robert and Susannah, abode Rope Lane, occupation baker.

There is a burial on 17 October 1835 at Purleigh, Essex for Susan MATHAMS of Purleigh. Interesting that she is listed as being of Purleigh when she has lived in Ipswich for more than 15 years.

On the 22 of December 1836 at St Clements, Ipswich, there is a marriage between Robert MATHAMS of this Parish, Widower and Caroline WRIGHT of this Parish, spinster, by Banns; he signed and she made her mark ITPO Robert CADE and Ann Maria WRIGHT.

The first child of this couple was baptized 5 March 1837 as Mary Ann d/o Robert and Caroline MATHAMS, abode Rope Lane, occupation baker.

Followed by the birth of Alfred son of Robert MATHAMS, Baker and Caroline formerly WRIGHT, Rope Lane, St Clements; 29 October 1838.
