#8 Mary COXON – 52 Ancestor Challenge

No Story Too Small – Amy Johnson Crow’s challenge of52 Ancestors this year, has been the inspiration to writing up my family history stories.

Today I am looking at my 4th great grandmother, Mary COXON who was baptized on the 10 August 1777 at Gateshead, Durham, England as the daughter of Thos COXON.  It did not list her mother’s name but we know that Mary FORD married Thomas COXON two years earlier.

The next we know about Mary COXON is her marriage to John HALL at St Mary’s, Gateshead on the 14th day of May.

Only six months later, the couple baptize their son Thomas HALL in Washington, Durham, which is about six miles away.

Two years later, Susannah arrived and then two years after that Mary was born but by this time they were at Fatfield, Durham

Then came three sons all baptized at Penshaw – John 1804, William 1807 and Michael 1809 who was my 3x great grandfather.

Twin girls Elizabeth & Margaret were born in 1811 and then Sarah in 1813.  This entry shows that her father is a pitman in the mine.

I haven’t found Mary HALL on the 1841 census but the 1851 census at Washington, Durham, shows her as age 76 born Gateshead, head of house, widow pauper.

I had trouble finding Mary in 1861 but then stumbled across an entry for John HALL 56, A HALL 56, W HALL 19 and M HALL 86 b Gateshead.  This fit perfectly with what I knew about her son and family but was thrown off by initials only.

Then I found her death on 7 Dec 1864 at Washington, Mary HALL  was age 90, widow of John HALL a coalminer.
