#21 SARAH PATTERSON – 52 Ancestor Challenge

No Story Too Small – Amy Johnson Crow’s challenge of 52 Ancestors this year, has been the inspiration to writing up my family history stories.

My 4th great grandmother Sarah PATTERSON was baptized baptised 20 June 1782 at Ipswich, Suffolk, the daughter of William and Sarah his wife.

On the 18th October 1807 Sarah PATTERSON married Charles WRIGHT, at Ipswich, Suffolk, both made their mark in the presence of John ELLIS & Ann Maria PATTERSON.

Their first child, a daughter Sarah WRIGHT was born 7 December 1810 but not publicly baptised until 8 September 1811.

Ann Maria WRIGHT was born 26 July 1812, and publicly baptised 30 August 1812.

Mary Ann WRIGHT was baptized 8 September 1815.

Caroline WRIGHT born 30 October 1818 was baptised 13 December 1818, abode St Peters, father was a sailor.

On the 27 day of March 1820 at Ipswich, Suffolk; Sarah WRIGHT received a 1/5 share of her Father’s Estate; £16 13 Shillings 3 farthings.

Finally a son Charles WRIGHT was born 16 October 1823, and baptised 2 May 1824, abode St Peters, occupation seaman.

The last child Rosetta WRIGHT was baptized 6 January 1828, and the family was now living at Rope Lane, occupation seaman.

On the 17 January 1833 at Ipswich, Suffolk; Charles buried his wife Sarah WRIGHT only 48 years of age.

#20 Charles WRIGHT – 52 Ancestor Challenge

My 4th great grandfather Charles WRIGHT was born about 1783 in Suffolk.

On the 18th October 1807 he married Sarah PATTERSON, at Ipswich, Suffolk, both made their mark in the presence of John ELLIS & Ann Maria PATTERSON.

Their first child, a daughter Sarah WRIGHT was born 7 December 1810 but not publicly baptised until 8 September 1811.

Ann Maria WRIGHT was born 26 July 1812, and publicly baptised 30 August 1812.

Mary Ann WRIGHT was baptized 8 September 1815.

Caroline WRIGHT born 30 October 1818 was baptised 13 December 1818, abode St Peters, father was a sailor.

Finally a son Charles WRIGHT was born 16 October 1823, and baptised 2 May 1824, abode St Peters, occupation seaman.

The last child Rosetta WRIGHTwas baptized 6 January 1828, and the family was now living at Rope Lane, occupation seaman.

On the 17 January 1833 at Ipswich, Suffolk; Charles buried his wife Sarah WRIGHT.

The 1841 census taken on the 6th of June showed Charles as a Sailor, with his daughter Maria 25 and Harriott COLE 30 a female servant.

Charles WRIGHT died 17 August 1846 at Ipswich, Suffolk; age 63, a Mariner, from Erysipelas, a painful skin infection. Present at his death was Ann Wright of Duke Street, St Clement’s, Ipswich.  He was buried 19 August 1846.

#19 Agnes REID – 52 Ancestor Challenge

Agnes REID, my 4x great grandmother was born about 1804 in Scotland. So far we have not been able to determine just which Agnes REID is ours.

On December 7, 1824 at St. Johns, Manchester, Lancashire, Peter CARTLEDGE married Agnes REID. The record states Peter CARTLEDGE of this Parish and Town, Coal Dealer, and Agnes REID of same Parish & Place, spinster, were married by Banns; ITPO John THOMPSON (x) & Mary Ann CLARK (x).

The couple baptized their first son Joseph Cartledge at Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire on 9 July 1826; their abode was Manchester, father a Coal Dealer.

The first daughter Margaret Reid Cartledge was baptized 8 March 1829 at Eccles, Lancashire.

Agnes Cartledge was baptized on the 25th of October 1829 at Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire; but this time the abode is Pendleton, and father is a Salesman.

On 7 April 1831 at Eccles Pendelton, Lancashire they baptized James Cartledge.

One year later, on 3 March 1832 John Reid Cartledge was baptized at Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire.

Again at Manchester Cathedral, they baptized Daniel Reid Cartledge on 11 May 1834, abode Manch, father a coal dealer

By the time they baptized their son Cornelius Cartledge on 17 Jul 1836 they had moved to Ormskirk, Lancashire and father Peter is listed as a Traveller.

Daughter Jane Cartledge was born 1838 in Ormskirk.

It is nice that several of the children carry the middle name of REID after their mother.

The census taken on 6 June 1841 at Ormskirk, Lancashire; records Agnes CARTLEDGE age 35 b Scotland, with Peter 35, Joseph 15, Agnes 11, John 9, Daniel 7, Cornelius 5 and Jean 2.

Two more sons are added to the family – William Henry Cartledge 5 May 1842 and Peter Cartlledge on 23 March 1844 both at Ormskirk

The 1851 census which was taken on March 30 at Aughton Street, Ormskirk, describes the family: as Peter CARTLEDGE age 49 b Nantwich, Cheshire, head of house, a Blacking Manufacturer, with wife Agnes 47, daughter Agnes 21, son John Reid 19, son Daniel Reid 17, son Cornelius 14, daughter Jean 11, son William Kerry 9, son Peter 7 and grand nephew John THOMPSON 2.

Ten years later, on April 7 1861 the census shows they are still at Aughton Street, Ormskirk, as Peter CARTLEDGE age 59, b Baddeley, Cheshire, a Blacking Manufacturer, with wife Agnes 57, son Peter 17, at the home of son in law George LEA 38, daughter Agnes 32, granddaughter Jane 7, grandson John 6, granddaughter Mary Ellen 4 and granddaughter Agnes 1.

In all census records the boirthplace of Agnes is only listed as Scotland.

Agnes CARTLEDGE, died 3 February 1867, at Burscough Street, Ormskirk, Lancashire; aged 62, wife of Peter CARTLEDGE a Blacking Manufacturer, cause – Rheumatism. Her burial was at Ormskirk Church on 6 February 1867.

Peter CARTLEDGE, my 4x great grandfather was baptized 8 August 1802 at Baddiley, Cheshire; the son of Joseph & Elizabeth.

Peter CARTLEDGE, died 8 November 1869 at the Union Workhouse, Wigan Road, Ormskirk, Lancashire; aged 67, Blacking Manufacturer, cause – Paralysis. His burial was at Ormskirk Church on 10 Nov 1869
